Weekend Report No 9

Cannock 1s  2 V 3 Leek

For an eagerly awaited game this is one that Cannock will be keen to forget! With both sides pumped up for the occasion it was Cannock who came out the stronger dominating the first ten minutes. In the sixth minute Callum McKenzie put Cannock in front and the signs looked good. There were further chances for McKenzie and Harry Jawanda, but neither found the net. Then a chance was gifted to Leek when Callum Swinnerton-Ions was robbed of possession to put the scores level. The half continued with further Cannock chances from breaks by Russell Anderson and shots from Jawanda, McKenzie and Dan Jowett. Leek were only dangerous when a lack of discipline and organisation in the Cannock ranks gifted the visitors the ball.

The second half followed a similar pattern with McKenzie once again on hand to regain the lead for Cannock. All seemed to be going to plan until Leek were awarded a penalty stroke. Although keeper Mike Gerrard got a hand to the flick it entered the net to put Leek back in the game. There continued chances at both ends until a Cannock error in defense gave the ball to Leek who slotted home their winner.

Cannock 2s 2 V 3 Khalsa 2s

Cannock lost 3-2 today and although they made a controlled start, the flow of the game was constantly interrupted by exuberant umpiring stoppages. A short corner and a goal for the home team came of this. Determined to play flowing hockey Cannock went on to equalise.

With tempers raised there were card thrown around with confetti. Man of the Match George Nellist received a yellow card for what appeared to be a clean tackle. Cannock lost form and structure and further cards to Willars (1 green and 2 yellows), Round (yellow), Hamish (yellow) added to the disarray.

There was a 2-2 stale mate for most of the game. Sadly a goal last minute saw Khalsa win 3-2 but Cannock somehow managed to edge off the pitch with their bodies intacted!

Cannock 3s 1 V 1 Leek 3s

Cannock 3rd team welcomed 3rd placed Leek to Chase Park on a bright Saturday lunchtime.
Cannock were seeking only their second win of what has been a tough start to the season. An honest team talk after poor results brought a good start from the hosts. Chris Mayer linking up well with Ed Martin, Ollie Southall and Isaac Spooner early on.

Half way through the first half Mayer dragged a short corner deliberately wide onto Ed Martins to give Cannock the lead. Despite other chances Cannock only led 1-0 at half time.

The second half however saw Leek grow into the contest, keeper Balcombe saving several short corners. The warning signs were not read by a ever growingly frustrated Cannock back line. Leek equalised with ten minutes to play from a second phase short corner of their own.

The game finished 1-1 and left Cannock in 9th place in the league table after six games. Next week they travel to runway league leaders Loughborough Students.

Cannock 4s 1 V 2 West Bridgford 4s

Yet another frustrating day for Cannock 4's. A trip to West Bridgford should have been an opportunity to take their first points of the season, but after 2 battling performances against the university sides, Cannock failed to show any desire or pace in their play. In a game made worse by a slow, sandy pitch, it was the home team that took advantage of poor marking. When Cannock passed the ball they created opportunities and Lewis Michael lifted the ball over the keeper to equalise. Cannock could have scored more but squandered chances and failed time and again to get an outcome from their possession. Unfortunately it came down to a poor umpiring decision that allowed West Bridgford to take the points at the death.

Cannock 5s 3 V 0 Telford

Cannock 5ths overcame a capable Telford side. Playing with more patience and confidence than of late, the 5ths weathered the early Telford storm before taking the lead with a scorching reverse stick strike from the ever popular Lee "Swampy" Marsh, for his first goal of the season. It wasn't long before the returning Paul Martin doubled the lead, with another well taken goal on the reverse stick. Cannock dominated the rest of the game but despite winning 7 short corners but we're unable to convert any of them. Instead,  Callum McGarrie showed no signs of the bad injury that had sidelined him in recent weeks. He finished a mazy individual run with an expertly finished reverse stick shot to complete a comfortable 3-0 victory.

Man of the Match went to Matt Wheldon for his tireless work in both defence and attack. Dominic Hoare was acclaimed as Dick of the Day within seconds of his extravagant aerial ball, which was sent perfectly to the moles who inhabit the grassy bank between pitches 1 and 2.

Cannock 6s 5 V 0 Bloxwich

"The 6ths returned to action this week following the half-term break with a home fixture against Bloxwich. With great support from the 5th team and the Badgers players the 6ths were able to field a side containing 16 players with a age span covering over 60 years. Cannock started well with the senior players encouraging the youngsters to pass the ball a move into space. With Cannock taking control of the game, the early pressure paid off with Gary Jones putting Cannock ahead. With further goals from Paul Martin and Evan Alcock, Cannock finished the first half as the dominant team and a healthy and well deserved 3-0 lead.

The second half continued in the same vain as the first with Bloxwich being limited to very few opportunities with the defence of Gary Jones, son Josh and Geoff Thomas keeping them at bay. With Phil Hubert, Geoff Gosling and John Ions driving Cannock's midfield it was inevitable that further opportunities were created and goals scored. A further three goals were scored in the second half with Paul Martin claiming a second. The final scoring being a well deserved 6-0 win for Cannock."

Cannock Badgers 2 V 5 Lichfield Badgers

On a cold Saturday afternoon at Chase Park Cannock's Badgers took on Lichfield Badgers. Cannock with plenty of youngsters decided to rest their adult coaches and used their senior Badgers players to set the tempo for the match. Unfortunately the cold weather seemed to freeze the younger Badgers players, and although Cannock enjoyed plenty of possession it was the pacey Lichfield forward line that enjoyed the success. Four times in the first half Lichfield played a ball through the centre of the pitch for a young Lichfield player to sprint onto and score leaving Cannock 4-0 down at the end of the half.

Following an encouraging half time talk the young Cannock team responded in a resolute way, taking control of the game and dominating it throughout the second half. Lichfield responded by playing a second adult, but they were always second best to Alice Runton, Evan Alcock, Harry Michael and Scott Olsson. Cannock created chance after chance, only to find the Lichfield keeper in fantastic form. Eventually Cannock got on the score sheet only for another breakaway goal to be conceded shortly afterwards. With the whole Badgers team showing great passion and desire a second Cannock goal was scored with many more opportunities before the end of the match. Although the Badgers lost 5-2, the second half performance was one the whole squad can be proud of.

Cannock U18s 1 V 1 Belper U18s (Cannock lost 4-5 on sudden death penalties)

Cannock U18s lost out cruely on penalty flicks to Belper in Round 2 of the EH Cup. They now get entered in the plate competition

Cannock U14s 3 V 1 Lichfield U14s

Cannock U14 Boys went into today's match against Lichfield U14 Boys hoping to improve on the result of last week's match against Ashby.

Cannock started confidently, putting early pressure on Lichfield and created a number of half chances that were well defended. Cannock were always susceptible to a break away goal as Lichfield played with a high forward and broke quickly. The first 20 minutes looked to be heading for a goalless draw, however just before the first break in play Connor-Lloyd Smith was able to deflect a shot from Evan Alcock into the goal for Cannock to take a 1-0 lead.

During the second period of play, the Cannock lads started playing more as a team and moved the ball with a little more confidence, again creating a few chances. Evan Alcock went on another of his mesmerising runs moving from left to right across the edge of the 'D' and finished with a low shot into the corner of the goal to put Cannock 2-0 up. Cannock appeared to be in control of the game, only to concede a goal right on the stroke of the second break in play making it 2-1.

Cannock continued to improve during the third and final period of the game with Harry Michael scoring within a minute of the start of the period. Further goals looked possible however Cannock either just missed the target or found the Lichfield keeper in good form. Towards the end of the match Lichfield looked the stronger team but the resolute defending of Josh Jones and particularly Liam Cooke with two goal line clearances stopped Lichfield from scoring. The match finished 3-1 to Cannock U14 Boys with the prospect of playing Telford and Newark U14 Boys at Cannock on Sunday 20th November."
