Weekend Report No 14

As the first half of the season drew to a close some of the Cannock sides fought out their final  league game before the Christmas break.

2s 2 V 1 Rugby & East Warwickshire

This was a tight game with chances at either end throughout the game. However Cannock edged ahead with goals from Callum Stacey and Daniel Hibbert. Despite Rugby pulling one back Cannock closed off the game to take the three points.

3s 2 V 2 Lichfield

Cannock Men's 3s finished the first half the season against Lichfield at a wet and miserable Chase Park.

The game itself did little to lift the gloomy weather as Cannock dropped to the standards of their visitors who some were only three points behind Cannock.

Captain Tom Widdowson put Cannock ahead but their lackluster performance continued giving their opponents the chance to equalise. Callum Warren put Cannock back ahead straight from the restart, however, Cannock still had one more mistake in them, gifting Lichfield a score draw.

If Cannock wish to finish in the top five this season they will need to add some consistency in their game and dispose of lower league opponents.

4s 3 V 4 Lichfield

A disappointing end to the first half of the season at the hands of fellow strugglers Lichfield. Cannock had spells of good possession, but a combination of poor passing and poor movement nullified their efforts. Lichfield took the lead from a short corner and doubled the lead shortly after. Cannock hit back with a goal from James Griffiths but Lichfield managed to keep the lead. Further goals from Wigg and Griffiths kept Cannock in touch but with two yellow cards at the end it was never going to happen. Lots of work to be done in terms of fitness, game management and desire. Happy Christmas

6s 3 V 0 Walsall & Aldridge

Cannock 6ths made an early visit to Birmingham to play a combined Walsall/Aldridge side at the ungodly hour of 10.30 am. With a bare 11 made up of 6 adults and 5 badgers players, a tough game was expected.
The home side put out a strong side of experienced players, but in the end they were no match for the fast paced attack of Cannock.
In a game in which they dominated after early threats from the home side, Cannock eventually took the lead after a scything run from Paul Martin who cut the ball back to the top of the D for Scott Olson to finish brilliantly.
After half time, the game became more physical and verbal, as Cannock continued to frustrate their opponents. Martin scored a goal of his own with a fine reverse stick strike before capping a fine performance by winning a penalty stroke, which was converted by the industrious Evan Alcock.
The defensive unit of Rufus Horn, Andy Hoare, Josh Jones and Lee Marsh ensured that a clean sheet was never in doubt. Swampy had a superbly assured and confident performance at left half.
A fine performance played in a good spirit.

Badgers 3 V 2 North Staffs

Cannock Badgers faced a young North Staffs Badgers side at Newcastle on a mild December Saturday afternoon. Cannock's Head Coach, Dave Michael, decided this was a great opportunity for the Cannock youngsters to show how far they have developed so far this season and encouraged them to play without any adults in the Cannock side.

Cannock started confidently and were soon enjoying a number of shots at the North Staffs goal. It wasn't long before Cannock took the lead through Evan Alcock, who then doubled the score before half-time.

Newcastle started the second half strongly, creating a number of chances which Joe Thomas, the Cannock keeper, saved well. Cannock started to loose their structure though and North Staffs capitalised scoring a scrappy goal mouth scramble, making the score line 2-1. Cannock responded almost immediately through Evan Alcock, scoring his and Cannock's third. However, North Staffs wouldn't give-up and continued to press Cannock, forcing Cannock into a number of errors. Another goal mouth scramble occurred and North Staffs pulled another goal back.

Cannock regrouped and managed to see the remainder of the game out without conceding another goal, finishing for the Christmas break with a hard fought 3-2 win.

......and then it was party time......led in Mexican style by our social trendsetters the 5th Team!
