Under 8s and Under 12s Clean-up at the Staffordshire Mini Championships
Cannock Hockey Club’s Junior players had a successful day at the Staffordshire round of the England Hockey Board ‘In 2 Hockey’ Championships, held at Chase Park.
The Mixed Under 8s side won all of their games, defeating Lichfield, Wednesbury and Leek, before finally beating Streetly 1-0 in the final, to be crowned Staffordshire Champions.
The Boys Under 12s had an early setback, losing 1-0 in their opening group match to Lichfield. This meant they needed to win all of their remaining group games to have a chance of progressing to the final. This they did convincingly, including a 10-0 victory over Streetly in the semi-final. In the final, they faced the same Lichfield side that had earlier beaten them, but there was to be no repeat performance, with Cannock coming out on top in a tense game, to claim the title.
The Girls Under 12s entered 2 sides. The younger side played with great enthusiasm and skill, giving confident performances against much more experienced opposition. The senior side had comprehensive wins in the group stages, before coming up against sterner opposition in the semi-final and final. They defeated experienced teams from Wolverhampton and Lichfield respectively on their way to picking up Cannock’s 3rd championship of the day.
Both Boys and Girls Under 12s now progress to the Midlands stage of the competition, to be held at Highfields in Nottingham on Sunday 21st May. A top two finish there would see them go forward to contest the National Finals in May, to be held on home turf at Cannock.
