Indoor Finals Weekend

Cannock’s First Team indoor hockey squad have just completed their second and final tournament weekend in the Maxinutrition Hockey 5s National Division 1. After gaining promotion from Division 2 in December this was always going to be a big ask to immediately achieve a second promotion into the Premier Division. However, the Cannock lads gave it a good go and had several factors been more in their favour this may have become a reality.

After the first weekend Cannock sat in 3rdplace having won 2 games, drawn 1 and lost 1. Cannock were without the services of Marc Edwards who was injured and their playing coach and talisman Dave Beckett, would was away, playing for England. However, Nick Bandurak made his return to take on the Beckett goal scoring responsibility.

Cannock’s first game was against a Southgate side that had made a slow start but were running into a rich vein of form. Unfortunately Cannock never really got going and despite a hat-trick from Nick Bandurak and a Pete Jackson corner conversion they suffered their heaviest defeat 12-4!

Cannock’s next game was against fellow promoted side Bath. Their previous encounter had been a close, hard fought encounter, so Cannock were expecting a battle on their hands. Cannock opened the scoring with a Pete Jackson corner, which was followed up by a further Nick Bandurak hat-trick. Bath scrambled a goal back but further Cannock goals from Dave Devey. Martin Ebbage and Louie Morris made it 6-1 at half time. At the start of the half Banderak was green carded and Bath seized the moment. They scored five goals without a Cannock reply evening up the scores. Then the Bandurak scoring machine sprang into action again with a further three goals to complete his double hat-trick and giving Cannock a 10-7 win.

The first game on Sunday was against bottom of the table Havant who were yet to score a point. Cannock opened the scoring and continued to dominate the game. However, they failed to find the net further and the score remained 1-0 at half time. After a couple of missed corners Chris Darnley and Ben Edge found some scoring form with a brace of goals apiece. The game ended 5-0 with another win to Cannock.

Cannock’s final game was against Surbiton who had already won the league with100% record. Cannock set about trying to bring this record to an end and give themselves an outside chance of second spot. Surbiton clinically went four goals up before Cannock got into a rhythm. Eventually Pete Jackson scored from the corner before Surbiton hit their 5thon half time. The second half saw a better Cannock performance as the two teams traded goals. Nick Bandurak went on to score three goals and Ben Edge added two more. With Cannock replacing their goalkeeper in order to push on goal, Surbiton found the net a further four times to make the final score 9-6 to Surbiton.

Cannock ended up in fourth place and although promotion to the Premier Division would have been a great achievement, the squad has made tremendous strides forward and has laid the foundations to push on for a promotion slot next season.
