Cannock Boys under 18s went into the weekends EH National Indoor Finals as Midlands Champions.
The boys started off their campaign on Saturday with a 4-1 victory of Bury St.Edmonds in Pool B, thanks to goals from Louie Morris, Callum Stacey & a brace from Callum-Swinnerton-Ions.
Cannock then took the momentum from this win in to their next group game as they demolished Plymouth Marjon 8-1 thanks to goals from Louie Morris (2), Callum Stacey (2), Dan Jowett, Reece Jecketts, Alex Kingston & Ed Carr.
As the action switched to the Sunday Cannock knew that thanks to their current 100% record they just had to keep their cool & they would qualify for the semi-finals.
Next up for Cannock were Preston & both sides swapped the lead before the game ended up a 2-2 draw thanks to goals from Louie Morris & Reece Jecketts.
With qualification already a formality Cannock went into their final pool game against Surbiton with a focus on rotating the squad to keep legs fresh for later in the day. The game ended 2-2 with goals for Ed Carr & Louie Morris.
Due to other results in the group Cannock qualified as pool runners-up & would face Canterbury in the semi-final - Canterbury qualifying with a 100% record from pool A.
On paper many people wanted this game as the final as it was no doubt the two strongest teams in the competition & the game did not fail to deliver.
Cannock set their intention out from the first whistle & stormed into a 2-0 lead with goals from Callum Stacey & Louie Morris, however, Canterbury immediately struck back with two goals in minute to level the game before just before half-time Callum Swinnerton-Ions restored Cannock lead. A calm Cannock team went into the second half with belief & this was rewarded when a training ground penalty corner move from Reece Jecketts saw them increase the lead to 4-2. Canterbury chased the game a scored a penalty corner of their own to make the score 4-3 but a professional display from Cannock saw them close the game out & book their place in the final versus Bowdon.
The final was more one sided affair as Cannock dominated the play as their opponents had no reply to Cannock s skilful offensive play enforcing them to drop into a very defensive press. But by the half time interval the Cannock lads had opened up a 2-0 lead thanks to a fine individual goal from Callum Swinnerton-Ions & a Callum Stacey penalty corner. As Bowdon had to chase the game in the second half it created more space for the Cannock forwards to cause havoc & the lead was extended to 4-0 with goals from Reece Jecketts & another for Callum Swinnerton-Ions. Bowdon did manage to score a consolation goal from a penalty corner to make it 4-1 before going for bust & pulling their goalkeeper to play with 5 outfield players, however it was Cannock who had the final say thanks to a Louie Morris goal to make the final score 5-1 & see Cannock crowned Boys U18 National Champions 2015.
