Posted by Rob Davies on 25 February 2015
He was a lifelong member and supporter of Cannock Hockey Club , even though his main roll was that of an umpire rather than player.
He service to the club was recognised when he was elected as a Vice President in the Jubilee Season 1953-54
He was heavily involved in umpiring with the Birmingham Counties Hockey Umpires Association and this service was recognised when he was elected as their President in the 1972 -74 seasons.
Bill was a school teacher by profession with mathematics as his specialist subject and he taught latterly at Barr Beacon Secondary School where he retired as deputy Headmaster,
He was a keen supporter of the Cannock 1st xi and watched nearly all of their home matches until he became to frail to sit for long periods of time. He was generous donating some of the funds that brought about the seating on pitch 1. Indeed there is a memorial plaque in front of his seat on the far half way line.
He was also noted as being the first person in Cannock [and the Midlands !] to purchase his Council House when this became possible with the introduction of this scheme by the then Government.
His funeral is being held on Friday 24th February at Stafford Crematorium at 11.30.a.m.
