On a gloriously sunny day at Chase Park Cannock were host to Burton, West Bromwich and Sutton Coldfieldin the final round of group games.
Cannock went into the fixtures knowing they needed to win both matches but also required a slip up from Burton if they were to progress further. In their first match Cannock played West Bromwich and from the push back they went in search of an early goal. Cannocks approach play continually took them into the opposition D, however, every shot seemed to find some part of the West Bromwich goalkeeper. With the first half ticking away, the ball eventually broke to Jamie Greenwood who found the back of the goal with a well taken reverse. 1-0 at half time.
Having made the breakthrough, Cannock ran riot in the second half starting with a run and a thundering shot into the roof of the net by Jordan Joiner who had been released by a pass from Alex Kingston. Jordan Joiner then became provider when he drew the West Bromwich goalkeeper before slipping the ball to Jamie Greenwood who made it 3-0 with his second goal of the match. Neat inter play between Jordan Joiner, Ollie Edward and Alex Kingston enabled Alex to finish of the move and make it 4-0. A long ball out of defence from Angus Bulpitt found Jack Rolfe who turned ttwo defenders before driving into the D and slipping the ball to Dominic Hoare whose cross was helped in by Jordan Joiner who soon afterwards completed his hat trick.
Cannocks second match of the day saw them face Sutton Coldfield, however Cannocks youngster went into the game knowing that whatever the score they could not overhaul Burton. In spite of this their spirits remained high and they attacked Sutton from the start and were able to build up a 2 - 0 lead by half time courtesy of two goals by centre forward, Lloyd Manley. Although Cannock went looking for extra goals in the second half their tempo was not as intense as during the first game and this allowed Sutton to make the occasional breakthrough. On the rare occasions this occurred James Bandurak was equal to the task and kept a clean sheet throughout.
The team has come a long way in a short space of time having been rebuilt from last season by Rob Davies. The squad should be proud of their efforts today and they have learnt from the mistakes made in the first match in October which ultimately has prevented them from going any further in the competition.
By the very nature of match reports it invariably highlights the names of goal scorers and providers etc., and this does not always give recognition to the whole squad, however, every member of the squad, and their names are at the top of this report, should be very proud of their efforts today.
