Cannock 5th XI 1  – 2  Sutton Coldfield 5th XI

20th March 2010

Scorer(s): Paul Martin

Cannock 5th's final home game of the 09/10 season certainly became a memorable one however, not for the reasons of which Cannock might have hoped for.

They played a Sutton team who were comfortable in midtable who were looking up rather than down, which was stark contrast to Cannock who's form had slumped and still need points to confirm safety in the division.

The game began brightly with both team creating chances through flowing hockey with the home side slightly edging it. The breakthrough came during the first period when the ever willing Paul Martin broke down the right and his cross shot which was in the opponents 'D' hit a defender and went into the back of the net. The remainder of the half became scrappy and bitty as both struggled to keep the ball. Half-time 1-0.

If the first half was scrappy then the second half was a completely different game and it certainly wasnt hockey. Tempers rose and frustrations grew amongst both teams as Cannock had a player rushed to hospital (Ricky Winfield, again!) as well as Lawerance Perry yellow carded for a tackle of which he and his club are very disappointed with.

During all this there was a hockey game in which Sutton equalised and despite their clear numerical advantage could not find a winner and it looked like Cannock had earned a deserved point, until.

With less than a minute to go a hopeful ball down Cannock's middle found a Sutton forward who managed to scoop the ball over an on-rushing Rufus Horne. This shortly followed the moment of the game in the form of the Sutton's celebrations.

This was tough on Cannock who must learn not only to win a game with their sticks but also their heads.
