Slazenger English Hockey League - Premier Division - 01st March 2008 Cannock 1st XI 0 - 3 East Grinstead 1st XI Scorer(s): After back-to-back wins, Cannock travelled to West Sussex to face East Grinstead on Sunday. The 2 teams have been swapping 2nd and 3rd place since Christmas and are both looking to clinch places in next season's European Hockey League. It was East Grinstead who held the advantage at the break with a slender 1-0 lead as they looked to do a rare league double over Cannock, and it was the home team who started the 2nd half well, scoring after 2 minutes to make it 2-0. With Cannock bringing some of their younger players into the squad, there was a contrast between the teams as East Grinstead have some experienced players and former internationals, and it was the Sussex team who scored the next goal to wrap up the points and hop back into 2nd place 1 point ahead of Cannock. Loughborough Students defeated Beeston to move into 4th place but are 9 points behind Cannock with 3 games remaining. So Cannock can guarantee at least 3rd place and European hockey with a point at home to Bowden at 2 PM on Sunday. Sunday did see some good news as Great Britain's men defeated India 2-0 in their playoff final in Chile to qualify for this year's Olympics. The squad includes Cannock's James Fair. |
