Slazenger English Hockey League - Premier Division - 23rd February 2008 Cannock 1st XI 2 - 0 Reading 1st XI Scorer(s): S Pilgrim, S Ramsden Cannock travelled to Reading 9 points behind their rivals who lead the league. Reading won their pre-Christmas clash 3-0 although that score line flattered the Berkshire side. With Cannock in a period of rebuilding and with coach David Mayer integrating a group of homegrown youngsters into the squad, it was perhaps as underdogs that Cannock went into the game. But with typical determination the squad pulled together to upset the leaders on their own ground. With the game scoreless at half time, it was a Simon Ramsden penalty corner that broke the deadlock. Although Ramsden's shot was saved, Stuart Pilgrim beat the defence to the rebound and fire the ball into the roof of the net. Cannock continued to compete and made sure of all 3 points when Ramsden was on target from a set piece with just 3 minutes remaining. Cannock close the gap to 6 points between Reading and themselves and East Grinstead who stay 2nd on goal difference. But with favourable results elsewhere, Cannock are now 8 points clear of 4th place in the race to qualify for next season's European Hockey League. The win over Reading was also a useful marker for when the team's meet in the 2nd Round of this season's version of the competition in Barcelona next month. Cannock host Canterbury at home on Sunday at 2 PM. |
