R. Sheldon:

Apologies: L. Alcock; J. Hibbs; R. Moscatiello; V. Wilkes:

Because of the COVID-19 crisis, with thanks to DP and HP, thiswas held by Zoom video link.

1. Minutes of the meeting on 10th December

These were accepted.

2. Matters Arising

All will be covered in this meeting.

3. Financial Update

DM gave a summary of the current position

Joint Account:

• £440 corporate tax bill mitigated. All transactions for last 18 months reviewed and amended tax position where appropriate.

• Sport club membership fees are exempt from Corporation Tax

• DM to provide all transactions at year end to allow internal review with TC and HP, and then for audit for FCA attestation.

• Closing Balance £1,900.

• No known joint liabilities

Men’s account:

• Current balance £29k

• No known liabilities

This is a lot better position than we could have reasonably expected post our exit from Chase Park.

It was indicated that £4000 was available for development opportunities including walking hockey, flyers hockey and back to hockey.

4. Future Planning and Direction

Given the current situation with COVID-19 and restrictions we need to try to plan our way forward for the short and long term. The Midlands Men have cancelled the remainder of their seasonwhile the Ladies still await to see if matches are possible before the 16th May. We need a plan to put before members and on line available for any enquiries. We had a discussion on the possible way forward. The following is a summary of the many points raised in the ensuing discussion: -

• Funding: What sources are available to see the Club through the Lockdown. The Equalities Fund was mentioned.

• Membership Activity: We will need a programme to encourage members back to active participation andencourage new members. As JH said, we need to demonstrate what we are offering and ‘be on our game'

It is expected that most will only be too keen to restart and play again but with no immediate possibility of competitive sport and possible limitations if a Tier system continues after the lockdown. It is also likely that holiday plans will be limited. As a result, we will need, for the Summer and running into next season, a programme to facilitate club activity. These could include

a) A published training timetable/pitch availability.

b) Arranged Club games - these could be 7 or 11 a side.

c) Explore the establishment of a Men’s local league with the local clubs. The Ladies already have their league. Some areas are already planning such leagues. JC will check with other local clubs.

d) As soon as possible the re-establishment of the Junior programme and a local league for matches for them. This is an opportunity to attract more youngsters who have been very restricted in physical activity. Do we need or have material that we can circulate to local schools?

e) Hockey Heroes. This has to be organised with coaches and ‘sidekicks’. Several names were nominated and these will be approached for confirmation at the next meeting. Safeguarding issues will need to be checked.

f) Could we have a ‘Walking Hockey’ competition?

g) The establishment of a local Mixed Hockey competition?

h) Greater use of social media to communicate developments, promote the activities available and recruitment. JC will confirm what Instagram and Twitter accounts are currently active.

i) The use of social media and players to make a series of skills videos that the Juniors can practice at home. ‘Silky skills’? JC to discuss with Stuart Gooderham.

Of course, many of these are dependent on the availability of EDA which will need confirmation. HP will update us

JH informed the meeting of some guidance and information received from Staffordshire Hockey Development Group. She suggested we might consider working with the Group on the way forward out of the Lockdown. This information will be e-mailed to all committee members

For the longer term: -

• We need to establish a base both for playing and club activities. IMac said that he had e-mailed Mr Watts to try to obtain a time scale and terms if we are to resettle at Chase Park. No response has yet been received. It was felt that we will need an answer if we are to continue with any plans to return there. He will continue with his efforts. LA will meet Jamie Fleet to discuss the possibility of the pitch cleaner returning to the site. However, in the meanwhile, we should explore alternative solutions. We can enquire from EDA whether we can get an agreement for a number of years. There is also a follow up to Monckton Sports Centre to be considered when we have a contact point. Other enquiriesare Burntwood Rugby Club and checking if there are any other possibilities within the South Staffs area.

• To start next season with a Club and Invitation Day.

• Membership: There was discussion on the membership subs. Some members have already paid a full season’s sub for the current season. Should we offer a discount for next year? Should we create other forms of membership such as for parents? We could also consider including reductions if members help with Club activities such as umpiring, coaching etc. To attract more members should we offer discounted rates? There should be a plan to help any Club members who may be in difficulties after the economic effects of the pandemic.

• Planning the financial implications of any decisions.

5. AOB

Club Mark: DP informed the meeting that this is ongoing. He will work through and tell us of any further information that is required.

Annual Dinner: SM proposed that it be delayed until September.Various locations were discussed and she will ascertain availability. There was also some discussion as to a different format. This will be important in re-establishing the Club’s social structure.

Club Kit: SM gave a summary of the current situation. Kit needs pushing for the Men’s and Juniors. It was felt that we could establish a centralised system for all kit.

Given that, by 22nd February, we shall have more information on the path forward after lockdown,

The next meeting to be held on Wednesday 3rd March at 7.30pm

Committee Meeting Minutes Dec 2020

Minutes of the Meeting of Cannock Community Hockey Club (CCHC) Thursday 10th December, 2020 Present: J. Chappell; J. Hibbs; S. Martin; I. Macpherson; D. Michael; R. Moscatiello; H. Pigott; D. Pugh: Apologies: L. Alcock; J. Hitchens; R. Sheldon; V. Wilkes: Because of the Covid-19 crisis, with thanks to DP, this was held by Zoom video link. 1. Minutes of the meeting on 26th November These were accepted. 2. Matters Arising Club Mark: DP informed the meeting that he will link with the EH site to commence our application. Coaching and Training: There will be club matches this Saturday. A Badgers match at 10.30am and a Club match 12-2pm. DP will help with the umpiring for the Club match. IT was proposed that we offer two of those members preparing for Level 1 Umpire assessment an opportunity to umpire this match with feedback from DP. SM made some suggestions as to the organisation of the teams was discussed to take account of the levels of ability. Maroon and white shirts would be needed. Full scale training Men’s should restart the first week in January. There was further discussion on the organisation of training and the progression of juniors to adult sessions. This needs to be discussed with Jamie Fleet and it was suggested that JH would be the best person as she is at the Monday session. DP will review the Men’s sessions. JC said the turnout for the last Friday session had been good with tomorrow being the last before the New Year. HP will book the pitches from second week in January. The latest Covid Tier restrictions have been published and we wait to see how these will be applied to any future resumption of League fixtures. League Structure: HP outlined the receipt of the proposals for the restructuring of the Ladies Midland League. There is to be a vote on it and she indicated that Cannock would probably vote in favour of it. Currently the Ladies 1st XI is still in the National League so this would apply to all the remaining Club sides. 3. Junior Section- Current Situation JHb updated the meeting on Hockey Heroes. We have to sign up on the EH site to advertise and organise the coaches to attend a session via Zoom. We need four coaches and he will speak to JH about arranging a suitable date. We have to decide and confirm the venue and dates for the sessions. He said that the organisation was pretty well set up. We need a major push to publicise this opportunity for youngsters. This can be done through EH, on social media such as Facebook and HP offered to contact school coordinators in all the local schools. EH will need confirmation of our dates. We discussed alternative venues for these sessions and HP will enquire pitch availability at EDA. Our thanks to John for all his time and efforts on developing this new opportunity. 4. Financial update DM reported on the actions he had taken to reduce the corporation tax payment. He has still to pay the affiliation fees and needs the costs incurred thus fat for hiring EDA pitches. He has made an estimate based on last years figures. He outlined his interviews thus far with NatWest on establishing an account. IMac has posted off the required annual returns to the FCA. He replied to an enquiry from the Ladies section as to why we had reconstituted the Club as a Benefit Society. Under this scheme we pay no VAT but corporation tax, there is no requirement for formally accredited accounts and is a better position from which to obtain grants. He enquired as to the state of the current finances for the Ladies section. HP replied that they are better this year and the losses last year reflected the loss of their Summer League. The Men’s section is operating a pay as you play system this season and is largely paid up. The 100 Club is awaiting details for the bank account and JC hopes to start in the New Year. 5. Chase Park Update IMac reported on the latest contacts with Mr Watts. DM noted that, in a recent contact, Mr Watts indicated he was still planning for a Sports Centre and saw the Hockey Club as being involved. SM asked how long could we wait for some decision from Mr Watts before we seek alternative solutions. We need answers as to the pitch times we will be allowed, the cost, will it be on a rental or lease to run the pitch arrangement. We would like LA to look at the pitches to update us on their condition. HP indicated there were very little alternative spaces to build a new pitch in the Cannock area. There was the previous report from Andy Hoare with regard to development along the A5. IMac was requested to contact him for the contact point to follow up this possibility. Other possibilities were discussed but our options are limited. 6. AOB The 100 Club: This is awaiting details for the bank account and JC hopes to start in the New Year. The next meeting be held on Wednesday 6th January at 7.30pm.

Weekend Match Reports 24th October 2020

Cannock M1s 5 - 0 Old Silhillians M1s

After last weeks mugging, Cannock returned to EDA ready to put in a performance their hard work in training deserved. Cannock were still missing injured Martin and Hyde, had the Jecketts boys away moving boxes and Goal Harris working this weekend so skipper Fleet called in the troops in the form of proper Cannock lad Luke Dalton.
Old Sils had won their previous games and started confidently. Cannock’s defence and goal keeper stood firm though and began to grow into the game. With their slight change of tactics, Cannock’s thug for life Widdowson was more tiki taka than tictac this week and it allowed Cannock to keep the ball excellently. The deadlock was broken when Dalton stole the ball off the Old Sils centre half and delivered to Dippa who doesn’t miss from that range (he does miss from closer normally). 1-0 Cannock. The rest of the half ebbed and flowed with both sides having many chances. Chewy looked to be in one of his “Thou shall not pass” moods. Cannock played some neat hockey to win many short corners but skipper Fleet was wasteful on the top. 1-0 at half time.
Old Sils came out fighting in the second half but again the defence lead by Spencer and Hudson stood firm. After soaking up some early pressure Cannock began to play with flair, precision and pace. Lewis Michael in particular showed what he is capable of. Cannock doubled their lead after some nice work down the right side resulted in Widdowson transferring the ball to Fleet on the left who wobbled with Brazilian flair into the D and looked like he was destined to slot it in the bottom corner but instead slipped it to Dippa for his second of the game.
Then the filth meter was turned up to max. Some quick transferring around the back lead to Fleet getting the ball just outside his own 25. Fleet , the self proclaimed fastest 30 year old of his BMI in Europe, glided passed the forward and midfield lines of the Old Sils press with cha cha style. Now on the opposition 25 he slipped in the other half back Ley who delivered a pin point pass to Dippa at the back post. Dippa’s hat trick complete. With the game seeming to be in control, Cannock gave away a penalty flick. Nobody is sure what for but given none the less! A goal for Sils here would of made things uncomfortable. Luckily for Cannock, Chewy remembered the old saying “form is temporary Class is permanent” and pulled off a stunning save.
Cannock’s 4th was an odd goal. With Sils firing the ball into the D from a free hit, Hudson intercepted and won a free hit. Suddenly looking up, Hudson saw Gooderham standing on the half way line by himself! Rumours of an untied shoe lace or even a fluttering butterfly taking his attention. However he ended up their it worked as Widdowson slapped the ball up to him and he ran through on goal. Young Chana made an excellent run to catch up with Gooderham and could easily had tapped it in on the back post but the veteran decided to go around the keeper and slot it home himself.
The fifth and final goal came from Hodgetts. Who seemed to have the weight of the world off his shoulders this week after his work issues were resolved (we can’t expand due to MOD guidelines). He picked the ball up and played a lovely one two before finishing into the bottom corner. 5-0!
A proper performance from Cannock. Hopefully the kick start to the season they needed!

The Force Awakens 🏑
Cannock M2s 8 - 1 Shrewsbury 1

Cannock travelled down the rainy M54 in their millennium falcons looking to extend their 100% start against a Shrewsbury side who were near the foot of the table. Cannock arrived in good spirits, to find former stag Alan Craddock had joined the dark side. Skipper Martin’s timekeeping meant there was no time for a warm up. His inspirational team talk made up for that; “your focus determines your reality”.
In team news, Cannock were much changed. With regulars Griffiths and Olssen unavailable for fair reason, and Yerbury missing due to his hand getting damaged by a radiator; rumour has it that it was a burn. Jesus, it sounded like it hurt. In their place came Rolfe and Mayer for their first 2nd team games of the season, with Finn the man McCall also returning after his strange omission by skipper Martin last week. Stalwart Dave ‘Yoda’ Bradbury retained his place as a sole central midfield presence, as he pointed out for the rest of the afternoon.
The first half was all about one of the new additions, but not who you would expect. After a fairly even start where Shrewsbury tried to put together some passing hockey it was Rolfe who opened the scoring. He then went on to score the second, the third, the fourth, and the fifth; from a cumulative distance of 8 yards, as Cannock took control of the game. Between Rolfe’s and Cannock’s fourth and fifth, Cannock did have a wobble. With Micklewright flailing his stick like Skywalker’s lightsaber (with his passing and tackling), a particular rogue one more in the Emperor Palpatine mould left Jabba The Hutt Bradbury scrambling as Shrewsbury broke away. Cannock did let in their solo goal to give Shrewsbury a Rey of a new hope in an otherwise difficult half for them. Assist king Wigg was in the middle of action throughout with some beautiful hold up and lay off play, somehow hiding Rolfe’s rusty return to action but reminding him so with the line; “Great, kid. Don’t get cocky”...“you’re still my padawan”. Most notable was Wigg’s reverse stick underarm pass that left Rolfe with little to do to complete his hat-trick and become a full member of the order. It could have been more for Cannock but the most they could muster from short corners was a meeting of the minds of Mayer and Wigg!
With the game somewhat over and done with by half time, Cannock took their foot off the gas as the fist 25 minutes of the second half were pretty scrappy and wasteful. JD and Alcock two consistent performers throughout. Daffern’s marking of his man was reminiscent of Chewbacca level loyalty, not leaving his man’s side. Sadly his work with the ball was not like Chewbacca with a wookie bowcaster. Cannock continued to ponder, Mayer heard to shout; “arrggghhhh two, put it in the D too”. It took for Bloomer’s interception and pass to Mayer to break the deadlock with eight minutes remaining, as Mayer sweetly struck home into the corner. It was well deserved for a man swanning around with the confidence yet grace of Princess Leia. Mayer returned the favour a minute later as he played a free hit to Bloomer, who beat his man and went around the keeper to put into an empty goal. Goal of the day. With the game ebbing out, there was only one thing that Cannock needed, and that was their inspirational skipper Martin notching. It came to much delight in the final minutes with a ramrod finish! As he headed back to the half way line to restart Cannock’s captain was heard to say; “Ho(c)key religions and ancient weapons are no match for a good blaster at your side, kid,"
Successive 8-1 wins for Cannock were enjoyed as the stormtroopers sat in The Brooklands (not The Beacon) and reflected on a successful first four games. Chat began of a league title charge, or maybe even the dream of a clean sheet one week soon for Connor’s good efforts. Tougher days will come for Cannock, but they’ll hope to continue their good form against Stone next week at EDA.

MOM: Wigg. Democracy votes for Rolfe, but it’s hard to vote for a chap who had nine touches, and five were miscontrolled. Wigg was classy as ever. Old friends not forgotten, hey sir!?

Cannock M3s 5 - 1 Market Drayton

Cannock Men’s 3’s went into the game coming off the back of an impressive team performance against Leek the week before. Cannock started well and found an early goal through Lewis Bullman. Cannock continued to apply pressure and soon found themselves 2 goals ahead courtesy of Lewis Asling.
Market Drayton never gave up and continued to apply pressure. After a quick restart following a foul, Cannock were caught out of position leading to Market Drayton's forward being clear through on goal to make it 2-1. Another goal for Asling made it 3-1 at halftime.
After an inspirational team talk from Cotters, Cannock were only encouraged to inflict more damage on Market Drayton and after some neat passing they found another goal through Joe Matthews. Cannock continued to impress with Derek firing in the 5th off a short corner rounding off a good performance. Improvements are being made each week and Cannock will need to play with more focus and consistency for 70 minutes next week against Stafford.

MOM - Lewis Bullman

Goal scorers - Lewis Asling 2 - Lewis Bullman 1 - Joe Matthews 1 - Derek Prince 1

Cannock L4s 0 - 3 Leek

Ladies 4s faced second in the league, Leek; however, we weren’t phased by this due to the fact their game wasn’t strong enough today to prove they were worthy of second place. The 4s held most of the possession in the first half and were able to get a number of passes using 1-2s through the middle right to the top of the D, we just unable to finish it off with a goal despite the fantastic efforts made by mid and forward players using some very good top D strikes.
Leek took on defence in a battle to gain more shorts which were successful for Cannock after knocking the ball out of the D straight away on the first strike they took. Leek came at us and unfortunately conceded 3 goals in the game. Short corners, thankfully for the defence, were minimal as they’re certainly not our favourite but we showed Leek that our positioning in the D on these penalties were a force to be reckoned with.
In the second half, possession was 50/50 and a lot of attempts made by both teams with both failing to get those much-needed goals as often as they’d like. 10 minutes into the game, play was stopped due to Jayne Flannagan getting a good smack by the ball into the face and unfortunately an ambulance was called and whisked her away which defence were very saddened by knowing that she is a fantastic defender. Wish you well Jayne!
Player of the match from the opposition was Kayleigh Luke; our fantastic junior player who is always smiling through the wind and rain and keeping those legs running and showing all of the older players on the opposition huffing and puffing away. Player of the match from Cannock was Kayleigh and Suzy (new to the team and had a cracking first game with us) for their fantastic game play today; well done ladies!

Leek 3 – 0 Cannock.
