Slavia Praha is the oldest (its centenary was in 1993) and largest Sports Club in the Czech Republic with more than 10,000 members. Its facilities are also the largest among our clubs. Besides the area for a number of sports in Prague 10 - Eden, the club also has pitches and facilities in other parts of Prague, i.e. for rugby, tennis, rowing, canoeing. It incorporates 22 sports in all, football being the most popular. It also comprises a section of sight- handicapped people.
Hockey has a special tradition in the Slavia Club. It is the oldest hockey club in our country. It was established in 1905, but hockey using 11 players began playing in 1921. A member of Slavia, Mr. Rezac, became a member of the first F.I.H. Executive. At that time Slavia Hockey Club had 2 - 4 teams in the top men’s competition. All historic artefacts, as well as archives, were unfortunately burnt to ashes during a fire on the Slavia stand in Prague-Letna where in 1948 the first match after World War II was played against India. A year later women started their activities. A compulsory move from Prague-Letna saw the club relocate to Prague 10-Eden, the place of former large pond and fun land on the outskirts of the city.
The documented history of Slavia Praha–Hockey Club started in 1956. The women finished in 1956 in 4th place and men in 1957 in 6th place in Czech first Division. From 1957 till 2005 the men’s team won 22 Championship titles and from 1999 - 2004 - another 6 titles. From 1956 till 2003 the women’s team won 23 Championship titles. The men’s team have been Czech Cup winners 11 times since 1980 and the women 7 times. Statistics for Indoor hockey started in 1968 and our men’s team have been Champions 11 times and the women 7. Slavia Praha is the best team in the Czech Republic with a long hockey history.
At present we have more than 400 members. The construction of a pitch with an artificial surface (new in 2003) and the opening of a sporting school for hockey players helped the promotion of the sport. We regularly organise a number of tournaments from youth to veterans. The team of veterans have successfully taken part in Veteran World Cups in Sydney, Utrecht and Malaysia. Our pitch has been used for significant competitions, from Qualification Tournament of the European Cup, the Alps Cup to the European Club Championship for men in 1996, 1997 and 2004 and for women in 1996 and 2000. Our own restaurant and the nearby Hotel SLAVIA (300 metres from pitch) help out guests to be content. We extend a warm welcome to everybody from all over the world to our beautiful city of Prague.
