| Cannock’s attempt to win the European Cup got off to a bad start with an opening loss to Polish side Pocztowiec.
Cannock began slowly and the Poles went 1-0 up after only 2 minutes after a defensive mix-up. With Cannock on their heels, the Poles were playing incisive attacking hockey at pace and were 2 up after 7 minutes. The hosts were still struggling to find their form but did pull a goal back when Simon Ramsden converted a 16th minute penalty corner. However Pocztowiec replied with a penalty corner of their own just 7 minutes later to regain their 2 goal cushion.
Cannock improved from this point onwards and were unlucky not to win a penalty stroke when Martin Jones was badly fouled in front of goal. But things went from bad to worse when the Poles claimed a 4th just before the break from another penalty corner.
The second half saw Cannock transformed as they came out fighting. A penalty corner from Simon Ramsden 3 minutes in saw them reduce arrears and continued pressure was finally rewarded when Martin Jones scored with 13 minutes remaining. Cannock then threw everything at the Poles but were thwarted by last ditch defending and denied further opportunities when apparently fouls went unpunished.
In the other group match, Atletic Terrassa of Spain hammered Slavia Praha 9-0. This means that to have a chance of making the final, Cannock must better this result against the Czechs today and hope that the Spanish side beat the Poles in their game later on.
