Cannock’s final group match against Spanish side Atletic Terrassa saw Cannock needing to win to qualify for the final. A cagey opening saw both teams testing each other’s strength before Cannock took an 8th minute lead with Simon Ramsden scoring from a penalty corner. But the host’s lead was short–lived as Terrassa broke forward and equalized within a minute. Despite this, Cannock were playing very well and had the better of the first half. However the breakthrough failed to materialize and the scores were tied at half time. The second half saw the Spaniards begin strongly but it was Cannock who took the lead when Barry Middleton was on hand to poach a goal. The Spanish side then threw everything at Cannock and the host’s were forced into some desperate defending. Cannock held out until a pass into the Cannock D was apparently kicked into the goal by a Terrassa forward. Whatever the case, the goal was awarded forcing Cannock to put everything into the last 5 minutes. But the hosts could not score the goal that would take them into the final. In the other group match, KS Pocztowiec duly defeated Czech side Slavia Praha 6-0 to put them into the Bronze Medal Match. In Pool A, Stuttgarter Kickers defeated Oranje Zwart 2-1 in an excellent match to claim their place in the final against Terrassa. Royal Leopold of Belgium fought out an exiting 4-4 draw with Stroitel Brest of Belarus. Cannock will now face Stroitel Brest in a crossover play off to guarantee the English place in Europe’s top 8 next season.
